  DESIGN HISTORY

2367:In the wake of the massacre at Wolf 359, where only 2 of the 42 ships survived the attack, one Federation vessel and one of the Bird of Prey. 11,000 lives were lost that day. Starfleet was left in shambles. Commander Shelby was in a postition to put the fleet back together. She proposed using some of the designs that were not chosen by Starfleet. As one of the twelve designs submitted to the ASDB, for the Defiant project was the Tomahawk. There are similarites between the two designs when the Defiant was shelved it was also decided that the Tomahawk would be more traditionally powered and armed, using a standard MARA and standard phasers. The more conservative branches of starfleet command and the federation felt that if Starfleet came out of this touting a fleet of 'Superships'; it would look like Sabrerattling by the people of Earth. Primary design work is finalized on the Tomahawk class and the primary hull construction begins.

2368:Wolf 359 Incident cripples Starfleet material reserves. It was decided to put the Tomahawk on hold until the fleet is back up to acceptable levels. The near completed spaceframe is towed to the Cochrane Yards at Alpha Centauri for storage where it sits until 2373.

2372:With the impending conflict with the Klingons and the Dominion Threat becoming real. The decision was made for an escort/interceptor craft. Commander Spencer Reese proposed bringing the Tomahawk up to speed. After a review in January of 2373 it was given the green light. The manufacture of two addtional space frames begins and two more are started three months later.

March:Basic chassis is manufactured and central computer core is Gamma Welded into place.

June:Ablative Armour for the warp nacelles arrives from the Antaries Ship Yard. There is a problem with the Ablative Matrix and it must be remanufactured. The outer hull is completed except for the engine bay.

November:Warpcore arrives and is Gamma welded into place. Outer hull fully sealed and internal fitting begins. Warp coils arrive and are welded into place.

2373:

January:Bridge module is attached. Crew quarters are fitted. Computer becomes self aware.

April:New ablative Armour arrives and is installed. Preliminary testing of all systems complete.

July :Ship completes its first warp jump. Minor problems are discovered with the warp engines and the SIF (Structural integrity field) and are quickly rectified. Testing of basic systems continues.

2374:

January:Warp Core passes Review Two and it tested to 85% peak. Computer system fully self aware and umbilicals from the station are cut as the ship become self sufficient. Impulse systems pass Review Three and
being autonomous low level power control. Secondary Back up Generators are shut down and become Auxiliary system control.

July:USS Tomahawk leaves Dry Dock for primary testing estimate to last one year.

December:USS Tomahawk returns to Cochran Yards late in year. Warp Stress Coating is applied and USS Tomahawk begins Deep Space assessments. All primary tests have Review 4.

2375:USS Tomahawk returns to Cochran Yards for final exterior markings and paint.

On 5 February 2375 the USS Tomahawk is officially commissioned by Starfleet at The Cochran Shipyards during a brief Ceremony.
